EdLaw Senior Counsel Wheatly Gulmi and EdLaw Director & YAF President and CEO Marlies Spanjaard have been part of a dedicated working group pushing Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) to ensure schools are promptly notified when a student enters foster care.
Today, members of that group published a powerful editorial in the Boston Globe calling for urgent change: too often, schools aren’t informed when a child is placed in state custody—leaving students without vital supports and putting their education at risk.
